Leonard Zwinggi

August 31, 1916 — January 21, 2011

Funeral services for Leonard Zwinggi, 94, of Gainesville have been set for Sunday January 23, 2010 at 3 pm at the Geo J Carroll & Son Chapel with Rev. Victor Cruz officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Fairview cemetery under the direction of the Geo J Carroll & Son Funeral Home. Mr. Zwinggi passed away on Friday January 21, 2011 at the Renaissance Care Center.

Leonard was born August 31, 1916 in Ardmore, Ok to Leo and Lenora Geray Zwinggi . On July 4, 1948 he married Eleanor Louise Flushe of Gainesville. He had been employed by Armco Steel prior to his retirement in 1981. He enjoyed working on his farm raising beef cattle.

Sgt. Leonard Zwinggi enlisted in the air force in 1941 in the CBI theatre, stationed in Burma and India. He received the American Defense Service Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal, W/1 Bronze Star, Good conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal and was discharged January 8, 1946 at Camp Fannin Texas.

Leonard is survived by his wife Eleanor Zwinggi, brother: Alrich (Red) Zwinggi, and 16 nieces and nephews.

Leonard was preceded in death by his two sons: John Russell Zwiniggi who died at the age of 10 as a result of a farm accident, Mark Zwinggi who died at the age of 20 while on an outing with friends at Lake Texoma; his parents: Leo and Lenora Zwinggi; brothers: Joe, Oscar, Kenneth, and Roy Zwinggi; and sisters: Loretta Bassett and Frieda Sutton.

Pallbearers are nephews: Stan, Danny, Kelly, Chris, Steve, and Jeremy Zwinggi. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church or Home Hospice of Cooke County.
