VELTA GRIFFIN LAWSON



The Celebration of Life Services for Velta Lawson, 89, are set for 10:00 AM Monday, April 23, 2012 at The Hillcrest Church of Christ, Gainesville, TX. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Her services will be led by her wonderful and special friend/preacher, David Gray, from Hillcrest who has seen our family through many long years of growing pains that were both mental and emotional which went well beyond just being a minister.



The family will receive and welcome visitors from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM at the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home located at 602 Lindsay St., Gainesville, TX, Sunday, April 22, 2012. We hope you will join us to share your moments of fun memories, laughter and love with us. We know that is what Mother would want.



Velta Lawson passed away Thursday, April 19, 2012, exactly one month before her 90th birthday at North Texas Medical Center of Gainesville.



She was born in Hamlin, TX to L.E. and Flora Mae Griffin along with her brother, Loren Griffin (all of whom preceded her in death). She met and married H.E. (Jake) Lawson in 1941 and continued being married to him until his death in 2006 (65 years). During that time, they moved 29 times, made gobs of friends and had loads of fun, plus two children, both still living in Gainesville. Daughter and Son-in-Law: Tanya and J.D. “Woody” Woodward; Son and Daughter-in-Law: Ty and Carla Lawson; four grandchildren & spouses; Kelly & Rodney Watts, Tracy & Mark Thompson; Kevin & Kellie Lawson; Chad & Cassy Lawson and six great-grandchildren –Ryan Watts; Brittany Watts; Cohen Lawson; Channing Lawson, Campbell Lawson; Jake Lawson.



Velta could always be found with a perfectly clean home, all beds ready for company, yummy food in the fridge and something like a hot coconut cream pie coming out of the oven, unless, it was girls day out. Then, the girls would put on comfortable shoes (or buy new ones) and spend all day shopping, eating out, (getting ice cream cones), hunting for bargains and figuring out how to justify their purchases. It also might have been bridge day and then the men had to fend for themselves. She loved life, loved living, loved her home, loved her friends, loved her family, loved her GOD and loved her Jake. The legacy she leaves for each of us is the hope that somehow each of us might be able to see a little bit of her in ourselves from time-to-time or have someone say, “Gee, you remind me of Velta”. You are invited to bring your memories and help us celebrate her life.
