Funeral Services will be held Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 10:00 a.m., at First United Methodist Church of Gainesville with Reverend Karen Martinez officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
Family visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at George J. Carroll & Son funeral home in Gainesville.
Hal Dick was born December 19, 1924 in Delaware Bend, Texas, in northeastern Cooke County, to J.R. “Tort” and Mertie Frances (Blair) Dick. He attended school through the 9th grade at the Riverside School in Delaware Bend. He graduated from Whitesboro High School in 1943. After high school, and the completion of Lake Texoma which forced his family to move, he attended North Texas State College in Denton where he was a champion boxer. In 1949, he graduated from Sam Houston State Teachers College and began teaching vocational agriculture in Slidell. He met his future wife Bennie Jean, who was teaching at Era when they married at her home in Richland in 1951. They both continued their education in Denton and in 1957, he earned a Master of Education Degree from North Texas State College. His teaching career also included years as an assistant principal at Gainesville Junior High School and superintendent at Callisburg and Era. He also taught math and vo ag. At Era, he was also the unofficial fire chief because the fire truck was kept in his back yard. He once won a calf at a raffle in Hood, then donated it to a community group in Era, so that the same calf was raffled twice. In 1987, he retired from Callisburg Public Schools with a total of 37 years of service. He continued teaching on a part-time basis through the Sherman ISD, and later, through Grayson County College, for fourteen more years; giving a total of 51 years in the field of education.
He is survived by his sister, Niobe Noland; son, Wes Dick; son and daughter-in-law Marc and Angela Dick; six grandchildren; Sam, Jordan, Elijah, Abigail, Zeke and Zoe Dick; and many nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his late wife Jean in February, 2004, his brother Laboyte Dick, and his sister Kydeen Riddle.
