Marcella Clara Metzler

Funeral services for Marcella Clara Metzler, 78, of Lindsay, are set for 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 20, 2015 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lindsay, Texas. Rosary and visitation will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 19th, at George J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Marcella passed away on April 15, 2015 after a hard fought battle with thyroid cancer.

Marcella was born July 29, 1936 to John J. and Edna Hess in Muenster, Texas. She grew up in Muenster and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1954. On June 15, 1954 she married Julius Metzler of Lindsay. For sixty years of marriage, Marcella spent her time being a devoted wife and mother to their four children. She especially loved to cook and create new recipes. A family favorite was her special barbecue sauce recipe which became the hallmark of the Smokehouse Restaurant in Lindsay when it opened its doors for business in 1976. Marcella made over 23,000 gallons of barbecue sauce before a bout with breast cancer brought her sauce making to a halt.

Marcella turned her attention to giving of her time to the sick and the elderly in nursing homes by playing her accordion for their enjoyment for almost twenty five years. She was an accomplished seamstress for her family. She also enjoyed making crocheted handwork, quilts, and tending to her numerous flower gardens.

Survivors include her husband, Julius Metzler, son, Jim Metzler and wife, Christine, son, Glenn Metzler, daughter, Mary Reiter and husband Lloyd Reiter, and daughter, Kay Lynn Grewing.

Grandchildren include Jennifer Mendez, Sherry Balthrop, David Metzler, Josh Stoll and Jessie Metzler. Also, included are Casey Stewart, Brooke Metzler, Travis, Karissa, Austin and Chisam Reiter as well as Kyle, Kevin and Kristen Grewing.

Marcella is also survived by ten great grandchildren, two brothers, Wilfred and Alfred Hess, and two sisters, Wanda Hermes and Dolores Neu, all of Lindsay. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, John Louis Hess.
