Doug Martin

Funeral services for William Douglas Martin, 93, of Gainesville, are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 29, 2016 at Callisburg United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Russell Martin and Rev. Karen Martinez officiating. The family will receive friends at 9:00 a.m. prior to the service.

Mr. Martin passed away January 25, 2016 in Gainesville.

Doug was born October 29, 1922 in the Rock Creek Community of Cooke County to C.T. and Trixie Lorene (Stanley) Martin. Following his graduation from Gainesville High School, Doug served honorably in the Army 8th Air Corps, 334th Bombardment Squadron during World War II. Upon returning from service, he worked for the Texas Highway Department, from which he retired in 1981 after 36 years of employment. In retirement, Mr. Martin engaged in farming and ranching in Walnut Bend. He cared greatly for the Walnut Bend School and Callisburg United Methodist Church, where his grandparents were charter members. Mr. Martin married Mary Jeanette Mitchell in 1952 and Maurice Holcombe Cheaney in 1975; both spouses preceded him in death.

Survivors include: son Ronald Lee Martin and wife Jane of Gainesville; nephew Rev. Dr. Russell Martin and wife Emily of Walnut Bend; step-daughter Vicki Cheaney Hall of Gainesville; step-son Steve Cheaney of Longview; great-nephew Justin Thomas Martin of Anchorage, AK; and sister-in-law Donna Sue Martin of Walnut Bend.

The family wishes to give a special thanks to Ivona Sarnecki who cared for Doug at his residence.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Walnut Bend School, where funds will be used to purchase computers, books, and science equipment.
