Services for Horace K. McCain, McCain, 97, of Gainesville, are set for Saturday, April 30 at 11:00 a.m. at the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery.
There will be a visitation held Friday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Horace K. McCain was born on January 1, 1919 in Gainesville, Texas to Tillotson and Pearl McCain.
He passed away on April 27, 2016 in Gainesville.
Horace graduated from Gainesville High School in 1936. He graduated from North Texas Teachers College with a BS and MS Degrees in 1940 and 1948. He began teaching at Gainesville Junior High in the Woodshop and coached Jr. High sports. He became principal at Benjamin Franklin School in 1941 and was drafted into the Army in 1942 where he attended the University of Kentucky and served with the 101st Engineering Battalion. After being discharged from the Army, he returned to Gainesville to teach junior high and high school sports and woodshop, and also Cooke County Jr. College night drafting classes until his retirement in 1983. Horace was proud of making a positive impact on so many lives, and was given the Gainesville ISD Alumni Association award as the Distinguished Educator of 2008.
Horace married June Davison on August 22nd, 1942. They were married for 67 years and raised three children. June suffered a stroke in 2000 and Horace lovingly cared for her until she passed away in October of 2009.
His wife, children, and grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Besides teaching and his family, Horace enjoyed quail hunting, fishing in Brazil, playing cards every Thursday night with his friends, spending time at his farm in Burns City and golfing each week until he was 95.
Working with wood was always his passion. He was recently honored by the Sons of Confederate Veterans as one of only four living grandsons of Confederate Veterans found in Texas, and was given a life membership to the organization. He was also a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association.
Horace is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth N. and Sheri McCain of Beaumont; Kyle H. and Martha McCain of Glen Rose; daughter, Karla McCain Devin of College Station; five grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandson; numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of players and students.
Horace was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, his wife, June McCain; grandchildren, Nickless Devin, Noel Devin, and son-in-law, Dr. Mac Devin.
Pallbearers are his grandsons, Nelson Devin, and Neil Devin, as well as nephews, Nelson Martin, Ray McCain and Mike McCain, and former student and best friend, Bob McDaniel. Honorary pallbearers are Gary Davison, Ward McCain, Mark McCain, and Matthew McCain, and the late Bill Lackey and Guy F McNeal.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to GHS Alumni Association, 800 S. Morris, Gainesville, Texas 76240.
