Edwin E. Wright III was born in Gainesville, Texas, on June 7, 1952, son of Ona Roberts Wright and Edwin E. Wright Jr. He graduated with honors from Gainesville schools while competing in track and field, basketball, and football. He received a full athletic scholarship in track to the University of Texas at Austin, graduating magna cum laude, followed by a NCAA Track Scholarship to the UT School of Law. While at UT, he was captain of the track team and was recognized as an All-American athlete, which he counted as one of the best times of his life.
He was father to two children, Natalie Ann and Edwin "Winn" Wright IV. He was nephew to Caroline Cunningham and Joy Craig, uncle to Victoria Wright, Laura Clark, and Ryan Wilson, cousin to Paula Roberts, Allysan Fuchs, and Susan Laminack, brother-in-law to Crystal Wright, and brother to David Roberts Wright, who preceded him in death.
He wished to be remembered not only as a father, brother, son, sprinter, but also as an upstanding member of the Dallas and Gainesville legal communities, where he was a trial lawyer practicing civil litigation and personal injury law. He served as president of the American Board of Trial Advocates' Dallas chapter, was named a Texas Super Lawyer and one of the Best Lawyers in America for over 25 years. He was a frequent lecturer on litigation issues and conducted mock trials with law students in Poland.
A memorial service for Ed will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, September 25, 2016 at the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville, Texas, with the Rev. Mark Loewen officiating, followed by a reception at the First Christian Church of Gainesville at 401 N Dixon St. No visitation is planned.
Honorary pallbearers will be Larry Lewis, Glen Thurman, JC Flowers, Mike Simpson, Al Ellis, Jack Ayres, Bill Sullivant, and Larry Sullivant.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas or to one of the Wright Family scholarships at North Central Texas College.
