Weldon was born on December 27, 1934 in a dugout at his family home in Lamb County, TX to James S. and Johnie Ray (Wood) McCord. He passed away at his home in Gainesville, TX on August 13, 2017.
Dad impacted many, many, young men and women during his long career as a coach, including coaching both of his kids, Gayla and Jeff. His successful coaching career began in Linden, but also included stops in Trinity, Silverton, Lindsay, and Gainesville. In each of these towns, Dad left a legacy of love, compassion, and patience for all the students he encountered.
This love and compassion continued into his retirement years. Dad loved to build bird houses to give to family and friends; as well as deep-fry turkeys for his friends during Thanksgiving season. Dad was the happiest when he was with the McCord clan, especially his siblings - Sam, Barbara, and Mackie - and all their extended families. Dad was a proud graduate of East Texas State University, where he played football alongside his brother Sam.
