MARTHA ASHLEY ROANE
Funeral services for Martha Ashley Roane will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville, Texas, with Rev. Charles Van Bebber officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery with Alan Wilkerson, Gary Wilkerson, Larry Wilkerson, Scott Wilkerson, John Roane and Tom Roane serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Milton Wilkerson, Chase Wilkerson and J.D. Roane. Local visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at West Oaks Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, June 12, 2008, at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home prior to the service. She was born August 10, 1910, to Stella (Jordan) and James Wesley Ashley in Whitewright, Texas. She married Homer C. Roane on July 1, 1933, in Marietta, Love County, Oklahoma. They resided in Valley View, Texas, off and on for several years and in Gainesville at Lake Kiowa for a period of time after retirement. She had worked for Valley View Builders as bookkeeper and he was a farmer at heart. During their lives together they also traveled during his employment with Western Geophysical Co. From Canada to Venezuela as well as many of the western states and Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma, but Valley View was always “home.” She was the last survivor of her immediate family, which included three brothers, Harold, J.R. and Eugene Ashley; and one sister, Corinne Key; and three nieces and two nephews. Homer died in 1992 while they were living in Whitney, Texas. She moved to Sulphur Springs, Texas, with her daughter, Clydene and her husband Truman Wilkerson in 1998. She was raised Presbyterian but became a Methodist after the church disbanded in Valley View. When at Lake Kiowa, she and Homer were members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Gainesville. After moving to Whitney, she joined the King Memorial UMC, and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Sulphur Springs, and was a member UMW and of Captain David Philips Chapter DAR. She will be greatly missed by loving family which includes three grandsons and their families, Alan and Mary Garland, Gary and Mary Rowlett, and Larry of Grand Prairie; great-grandchildren, Scott and Kristi of Forney, Jennifer Hervey of Heath, Carol and Dave Ellis of Port Arthur, Kathleen of Rowlett, Chase of Grand Prairie, Ashley of Euless, and Kristen of Nacogdoches; great-great-grandchildren, Taylor an Natalyn Hervey of Heath; nieces, Helen, Jim and Todd Burns of Lubbock and Nadine and Bob Janke and family of Michigan. She always felt as close to the Roane family as her own and is survived by sister-in-law, Betty Roane and family John and Gail, J.D. and Kay of Valley View, Carol Roane of Kentucky, Martha and Randy Reedy and family of The Woodland, and Tom and Cherilyn and family of Decatur, David Roane and family of Wace and Lewis Roane and family of Washington, Doris and Willie Antonetz of Corpus Christi and Sue and Bill Hilz of Pilot Point and many friends from every place she lived.
