Walter R. O'Gorman

ervices for Walter O’Gorman, 82, of Gainesville are set for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gainesville with Fr. Dennis Smith officiating. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery under the direction of the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home of Gainesville.

Mr. O’Gorman died Feb. 29, 2008, at his residence due to complications from metastatic skin cancer.

He was born Dec. 5, 1925, in Shamrock to Thomas Francis and Anna O’Gorman. The youngest of seven children, he was 2 when his mother died. He excelled in athletics as a student at Shamrock High School. He lettered in football three years, two years in boxing, won four AAU boxing tournaments, and was named All District Fullback his senior year, when the Fighting Irish of Shamrock won bi-district, only to lose at regionals on penetrations. After being graduated 2 months early so that he could report to duty sooner as an Army private during World War II, he served 20 months in the Corps of Engineers, the majority of the time at a ship refueling station in Hilandia, New Guinea. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Technical Sergeant. He married Naomi Ruth Sluder on Jan. 25, 1957, in Gainesville. He worked at least two jobs most of his life. He worked as a compresser station operator and repairman for Lone Star Gas Company until his retirement in 1991.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; his son, Mark; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Danny and James.

The Rosary wil be prayed for the repose of the soul of Walter O’Gorman beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 6 at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville. Visitation will take place immediately after the Rosary.

Memorial contributions may be made in Walter O’Gorman’s name to St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
