LINDSAY — Services for Leonard Joseph Hermes, 75, of Lindsay are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Rev. Ron Scheible, O.S.A., officiating. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery under the direction of the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home of Gainesville.
Mr. Hermes died Feb. 9, 2008, in Wichita Falls.
He was born Oct. 11, 1932, in Lindsay, the second son of Ben and Margaret Block Hermes. Leonard graduated from Lindsay High School in 1950. He worked around the area in the oilfields and farming until being drafted to serve in the Army of the United States and being assigned to Camp Carson, Colorado, in a Tank Battalion. Following his discharge, Leonard returned to Lindsay and attended Cooke County College, and subsequently at North Texas State University, graduating in 1958.
Following his graduation, he taught drafting, engineering and plastic technology at the Spence Junior High and North Dallas High Schools, both in the DISD for 28 years.
Upon his retirement in 1986, he enjoyed traveling and hunting, residing at the Hermes homeplace, southwest of Lindsay.
Leonard was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and member and officer of the Catholic Life Insurance Union, Branch No. 34. He was also a member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church Choir; a Past Member of the Lindsay School Board; a member of the Lindsay Volunteer Fire Department; and President of the Lindsay Gun Club.
Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Marge “Sis” and Jack Alexander of Wichita Falls; long-time family friend, Rita Cottle of Plano; nieces and their husbands, Diane and Jeff Neu of Lindsay, Lisa and John Macha of Wichita Falls; niece, Donna Bohac of Wichita Falls; nephews and their wives, Joseph and Jane Bohac of Gainesville, Michael and Sharon Hermes and their children, Walter and Kathleen Lutkenhaus and their and family of Lindsay.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Ben and Margaret Block Hermes; by his brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Dorothy Mae (Nortman) Hermes; brothers-in-law and their wives, Lawrence and Olivia Streng; and brother-in-law, Joe Pat Bohac.
Pallbearers are Walter Lutkenhaus, Rudy and Paul J. Hess, Doug Schmitz, James Dennison Jr., and Jim Hermes.
Honorary pallbearers are George Lutkenhaus and Donna Bohac.
The Rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Wednesday at St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Hughes-Tune Post, Veterans of Foreign Wars in Gainesville or to the Subiaco Academy in Subiaco, Ark.
