Mary Lou Turner Almon, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-
grandmother, great-great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully
at home June 16, 2007.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 19, 2007 at 3 pm at George
J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home Chapel. A visitation will follow the service
and a there will be a private family burial at Fairview Cemetery.
Honorary Pallbearers are David Ford, James Call, Jonathan Hope, Morgan
Cole, Michael Almon and Russell Almon.
Mary Lou Turner Almon was born in the Dean Community, Smith County,
Tyler, Texas, to James Monroe and Eunie Griffin Turner on September 1,
1907. She had the distinction of being the first driver of the first school bus
purchased in Cooke County while attending and completing Newsome
Daugherty Memorial High School, now know as Gainesville High School, in
1925. Mary Lou Turner married Burney F. Almon on November 18, 1925.
Mrs. Almon was a homemaker and active in two Home Demonstration
Clubs in the 1940s and 1950s. Family life was very important to Mrs.
Almon. She was a loving and nurturing mother of 6 children. Mrs. Almon
was a devoted Christian and a long-time member of First Baptist Church of
Gainesville where she taught Sunday School for many years.
Mrs. Almon was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Burney F.
Almon, July 1988; a daughter, Marilyn Almon Edgar, June 1986; and a son,
Douglas Almon, July 1986.
Survivors include sons, Harold A. Almon and wife, Wanda, of Gainesville,
Turner Almon and wife, Connie of Gainesville; Daughters, Lou Almon
Morgan of Fort Worth and Claire Almon Ford of Victoria; 13 grandchildren,
21 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Amy
Lee Turner of Victoria, TX; a brother, Hugh Turner and wife, Elzie of
Glendale, AZ, and numerous nieces and nephews and dear relatives. She
was respected and admired by all who knew her. Wonderful memories will
remain alive in the hearts of all who loved her.
