Erwin Newton Caldwell

Memorial services for Erwin N. Caldwell, 96, of Gainesville, are set for 3:00 PM Sunday, May 24, 2009 at the 1st Christian Church with Rev. Mark Loewen officiating. A reception at the church will follow .

Erwin N. Caldwell passed away May 13, 2009 in Gainesville.

Mr. Caldwell was born January 9, 1913 to Andrew and Bessie Wilt Caldwell in Cleveland, OH. He married Dorothy M. Robinson on December 11, 1943 in Gainesville. Mr. Caldwell was a World War II veteran. He liked to say that he “opened Camp Howze and closed it” having been one of the first stationed there and one of the last to leave. Also, he was a well known artist and wood carver.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy of Gainesville, his sister in law Virginia Crawford, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews to whom he was known as uncle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Harry Caldwell, Royce Caldwell, and his sister Evelyn Sanderson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the 1st Christian Church Building Fund, 401 N. Dixon St., Gainesville, TX 76240 or to a charity of your choice.
