Opal Hughes

Funeral Services for Opal L. Hughes, 89, of Gainesville, formerly of Wichita Falls, are set for Tuesday June 8, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Hubert Wright Officiating with a visitation to follow the funeral. Burial will follow at Crestview Memorial Park in Wichita Falls on Wednesday June 9, 2010 at 10:00 am.

Mrs. Hughes was born February 8, 1921 in Childress to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Cole. She went peacefully to her heaven home on June 5, 2010 at Gainesville Health & Rehab.

Mrs. Hughes was a devoted wife to Marshall, a loving mother to Charlotte and Marsha and an adoring grandmother to her four grandchildren. Opal was a homemaker and life member of the PTA serving on both the local level in Wichita Falls and the state level. She was an active member of Lamar Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, serving in many areas. Opal also worked for McClurkans for thirty years in Wichita Falls. When she retired in 1991, she volunteered with hospice and would take cancer patients to their radiation and chemotherapy treatments when they were unable to drive. She was a thirty-five year survivor of breast cancer.

She married the love of her life Marshall Henry Hughes on January 8, 1939 who survives her at GH&R. She is also survived by daughters and sons in laws Charlotte and Harry Bevil of Broken Arrow, OK and Marsha and Steve Day of Lake Kiowa, four grandchildren and their spouses Paul and Leslie Buford of Denton, Lane and Stephanie Tisdale of Denton, Jarrett and Tracy Bevil of Broken Arrow, OK, Steven and Alison Day of Dallas, five great grandchildren Caleb, Nathan and Charis Buford, Cole Tisdale and Harrison Day, and many nieces and nephews.

Opal was preceded in death by her parents Walter and Ada Cole, a sister Edna Faye Curry, and her brothers Robert Cole, Ray Cole, and Harvey Cole.

The family would like to thank the staff at Gainesville Health and Rehab for the excellent care of Opal this last year. The family request the memorial contributions be made to Lamar Baptist Church 1100 Harrison Wichita Falls, TX 76309 or a hospice of your choice.
