ROBERT “BOB” L. PENTON
Lifelong resident Robert “Bob” Penton, born June 16, 1924, passed away on April 22, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on April 25, 2009 at Whaley Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Goodwin officiating.
Interment will follow immediately at Fairview Cemetery. Family visitation will be held on April 24, 2009 from 7-8 p.m. at the Geo. J. Carroll and Son Funeral Home. Funeral services are under the direction of the Geo. J. Carroll and Son Funeral Home.
Bob attended Gainesville Public Schools and graduated with an A.A. Degree in Liberal Arts from CCJC.
After graduation from high school, Bob joined the U.S. Navy as an A0M2. He served during World War II based out of San Diego, Calif. While on leave he met Louise Pickett and they were married on May 13, 1945. Upon discharge from the Navy he returned home to Gainesville. A daughter was born on June 16, 1946, which fell on Father’s Day that year.
Bob worked driving an over the road truck and a driller and roustabout in the oil field. When National Supply opened a plant locally, he was employed as a tool and die maker. He retired after 27 years of dedicated service.
After retirement, Bob enjoyed golf, woodworking, and gardening. He and Louise were well known for supplying the best pecans in the area and had many faithful customers. He was an avid reader and loved to work crossword puzzles. Two of his favorite pastimes were fishing and deer hunting.
Bob and Louise often traveled, enjoying the sights within the USA including Alaska and Hawaii. They also traveled extensively throughout Europe, Mexico, Panama, Haiti, Guatemala, Honduras, and most of the Caribbean Islands. They renewed their wedding vows on their 50th year anniversary while on a cruise to Aruba.
Bob has been a lifelong member of Whaley Methodist Church, joining in 1937. He is one of two of the oldest members to date. He is also a life member of the Veteran’s of Foreign War, Chapter 1922.
Survivors are his loving wife of 63 years, Louise; daughter, Bobbie Pearson; granddaughters, Lisa Willey and Cynthia Adair; great-granddaughter, Jessica Willey; great-grandson, Joshua Willey and three sisters, Rose, Alice and Fay.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Rosa and three brothers, Richard, June and Jimmy.
Pallbearers will be Paul Kiesel, Vernon Davis, Jerry Tucker, Eddie Smith, Kevin Brewer and Byron Canady. Serving as alternates will be Ernest Wolf, Charlie Brown, Tom Schalk, David Pearson and William O’Gorman.
Bob, “May you rest in eternal peace with the Angels until we meet you again.”
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the following organization of your choice, The American Cancer Association, American Kidney Foundation or Home Hospice of Cooke County.
