Mrs. Schmitz peacefully passed on Sunday, May 7, 2023, after a short illness at her home in Gainesville. Albina Ann Mages Schmitz was born on February 15, 1934 at the Mages family’s second home east of Muenster. She was the fifth child of seven children born to Joe and Theresa Bayer Mages. She also had a half- brother, Edgar Mages. She grew up primarily on the Mages home place two miles east of Muenster, where the family moved when she was a young girl. Albina attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1952.
After graduation she attended Cosmetology School and after receiving her state license, worked as a hairdresser in Muenster. She was introduced to her future husband, John H. (Johnny) Schmitz by her sister, Clara and her husband Harold Schmitz, who was Johnny’s first cousin. Albina liked to tell the story of Johnny seeing her as he drove down Main Street in Muenster and asking her where she was going. When she said “across the street”, he told her to hop in, she did and he made a U-turn and dropped her off on the other side of the street. On May 30, 1955 they were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Muenster. They owned and operated Johnny’s B-29 Club and Johnny’s DX gas station across the river from 1955 until the early 1980’s. Albina worked in their businesses, but primarily spent her time at home raising five children. Albina also worked at various jobs after they sold the businesses across the river including Braum’s and doing house cleaning. Following retirement, Albina enjoyed spending her time making afghans and traveling. She also spent many years attending Al-Anon meetings and volunteering as a Foster Grandparent. Albina was a member of St. Mary’s Parish for nearly 68 years, singing in the choir for well over 40 years, volunteering as a member of the Altar Society and as the coordinator assisting volunteers bringing Holy Communion to Catholics in nursing homes or the homebound. She was also dedicated to serving St. Mary’s School, where several of her children attended and graduated. She was also the CYO sponsor along with her sister Chubby when their children were in High School. She loved to bake, especially her cinnamon rolls shaped like Christmas trees, banana bran muffins and zucchini bread, most of which she gave for others to enjoy. Albina enjoyed fashion and was known for her sense of style and her love of hats. She loved music of all kinds, singing and dancing. She also loved butterflies and flowers, especially sunflowers. She brought joy with her telephone calls to wish happy birthday and happy anniversary to all she knew.
Albina is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Annette Schmitz of Lindsay; daughter and son-in-law, MaQuita and Doug Gossett of Gainesville; son and daughter-in-law, John and Sandy Schmitz of Gainesville; son-in-law Brad Crowsey of Whitesboro; and son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Misty Schmitz of Gainesville, seven grandchildren Brandi McLean (Jacob), Tiffany Ward (Mitchell), Shelby O’Connor (Eddie), Suzanne Schmitz, Kenadie Schmitz, Victoria Smith (Matthew), and Nicholas Schmitz and five great-grandchildren, Colton McLean, Camryn McLean, Lucy Ward, Henry Ward and Sally Ward.
