Wesley Armand Baughman, 81, passed away on April 26, 2023 during his second bout of Esophageal Cancer. Armand fought hard to recover but went home to be with the Lord, strength renewed and in the arms of his wife he adoringly called “Bear”.
Armand grew up in Hutchinson, KS where he graduated from Hutchinson High School and was a standout wrestler and football player. He continued his education at the University of Kansas where he played fullback for the Jayhawks. In 1961, he played in the Bluebonnet Bowl against Rice University, which they won 33-7. Sidelined by a knee injury while with the Cleveland Browns, Armand did not return to football, but instead pursued a career in aviation. Armand had a passion for flying like his dad, Wesley Ancil Spikes, who passed away when Armand was an infant. He went on to work for Texas International Airlines flying DC-9 jets. After a merge with Continental Airlines, he flew the MD-80, and retired (31 years) flying international trips on the DC-10. He was thankful to the Lord that “an old farm boy like me gets to fly these jets”. In retirement, he loved to fish and camp at Wilson Lake (Kansas) and Lake Texoma. Wherever he went, he never met a stranger. Armand was kind, tender-hearted, and larger than life who loved family and his dogs. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Armand is survived by: wife of 39 years, Sherry; sons from his first marriage, David, Mike (Mary), and Chad (Kim); many grands and great-grands; and brother Ron (Sally).
Armand was preceded in death by: parents Earl and Carol Baughman; and brother Kenny.
