Betty Jean Sluder

Betty Jean Sluder, 93, of Gainesville, passed away September 30, 2023, in Gainesville.

Betty was born December 12, 1929 in Gainesville to George and Bessie (Barnett) Stice.  She graduated from Gainesville High School in 1947 and studied at Cooke County Junior College.  In 1948, she married her high school sweetheart, Bill Sluder and they had two children.  Early in life, Betty worked at Clayton’s Dry Goods and later as a seamstress at Miller’s Cleaners.  She retired as church secretary and bookkeeper from Hillcrest Church of Christ after 27 years, where she was a charter member and taught Sunday School for 17 years.  Mrs. Sluder was lovingly involved in her children’s lives, serving in P.T.A., and as a Den Mother in Scouts.  The Sluders enjoyed traveling, fishing on Lake Texoma as members of the Gainesville Boat Club, and spending time at their cabin with family.  Mrs. Sluder was an accomplished artist, enjoying oil painting, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and working in her yard.

Survivors include: daughter Tracy Sluder Stark of Gainesville; granddaughters Carly McKamie (Kyle) of Farmers Branch and Hayley Loftice (Sean) of Denton; great-grandchildren Hollin Jean Loftice, Witten Kyle McKamie, and Conor Lane Loftice; and six nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Sluder was preceded in death by: parents; husband, Bill; son, Randy Sluder; three brothers; and two sisters.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 5, at Hillcrest Church of Christ.  At a later date, Mrs. Sluder will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the care of Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.
