Cal Koontz

William Calvert "Cal" Koontz went home to be with the Lord Jesus on Thursday, July 8, 2021. Cal was born to Lucille and Calvert Koontz on August 29, 1941, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in Durant, OK, attended college at Southeastern State University and Oklahoma State University. He married Marilyn Trubenbach on January 20, 1968, in Dallas. They raised their children Angie and Kevin in Corpus Christi, TX, and San Antonio, TX, where he spent his professional life serving patrons and managing corporate staff of many retail organizations, including Dillard's and Satel's. They retired to Gainesville in 2010 where he lived out the rest of his days with Marilyn.

Cal was a loving husband, uplifting father, and generous friend. He was a larger-than-life character with an energy that filled up any room he entered. Anyone who met him would inevitably carry with them the resonance of his warm smile, booming laugh, and possibly a light-hearted jab. He was a great storyteller with an impeccable memory for detail... indeed, the life of the party. His life was one of service to his God, family, and community. Beyond his professional life, his true passion was being a servant of, and champion for every community in which God planted him. In Corpus Christi, Cal served as president of the Chamber of Commerce, was active in the Corpus Christi Naval league, on the Nueces County State School board, and served as a mentor to many young men in the community. In San Antonio, he poured his life into the Episcopal Church community at St. Marks Church, becoming a deacon and serving on the Vestry. After retiring in Gainesville, he dove in head first again. He embraced the Boys and Girls Clubs of Cooke County, eventually becoming President of their Board. He was so proud to have helped build their new facility. It was his Gainesville pride and joy. Cal and Marilyn also served with Dash, delivering meals to those in need. In addition, he and his Rotary Club friends placed flags in the community, which he enjoyed immensely. His leisure time was filled with his breakfast groups, dinners with countess friends, time with grandchildren in Georgia, and heading to Dallas to see grandsons sporting events.

Cal is survived by his wife Marilyn of 53 years, daughter Angie Russell and husband Andee of Dallas, son Kevin Koontz and wife Rachel of Peachtree City, GA, grandchildren: Austin, Adam and Andrew Russell of Dallas, Eden, Mia, Ava, and Quin Koontz of Peachtree City, GA; and sister Virginia Young and husband Jim of Ardmore, OK.

Cal was a blessing! His generous, friendly, and kind life will remain in the hearts of those privileged to have known him.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at 2:00 P.M., at Whaley United Methodist Church in Gainesville, TX. Visitation will be held the evening before from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville, TX.

The family requests that donations in his honor be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Cooke County.
