Carl Mitchell

Carl Douglas Mitchell, Sr., 87, of Era, passed away December 11, 2022 in Era.

Carl was born April 12, 1935 in Frederick, OK and graduated high school in Putnam City, OK.  He married Glenda Long on December 31, 1955 in Shawnee, OK.  A life-long love of aviation began when he obtained his pilot’s license and purchased an airplane at the age of 16.  Mr. Mitchell flew for Haliburton, Texas International, Continental Airways, Samsung, and as an Air Force instructor, living in various locals including Kansas, Iowa, Georgia, Hawaii, Guam, and Korea.  He logged over 30,000 hours of flight time and retired in 1995.  Mr. Mitchell enjoyed working his farm, caring for his animals, and continued flying recreationally in retirement.  He was a member of Era Church of Christ.

Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by: parents Harbert and Gladys (Witherspoon) Mitchell; brother Nolan; and sisters Mary, Ann, and Laura.

Survivors include: wife of nearly 67 years, Glenda Mitchell of Era; son Doug Mitchell and wife Kathy of Era; daughter Mitzi Lyons and husband Kyle of Willis; grandchildren Marissa Payne and husband Jesse, Tanner Lyons, Travis Lyons and wife Lacie, and Kayla Lyons; great-grandchildren Macy and Violet; and sister Margaret Strouhal of Norman, OK.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 14 at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.  A funeral service is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 15 at Era Church of Christ.  Interment will follow at Era Cemetery.
