Clarence John Hellman passed away on August 1, 2024 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. CJ was born on January 9, 1940 in Muenster, Texas to Clarence A. Hellman and Ernestine C. (Huchton) Hellman. He graduated from Muenster High School and then served three years in the United States Army. CJ married Alice Joan Walter on July 11, 1964. He became a highway patrolman for the Texas Department of Public Safety in 1970. After 24 years of faithful service, CJ retired from the DPS and spent the next 30 years traveling, building things and helping anyone that asked him for a favor and many who didn’t ask.

CJ loved life. He enjoyed numerous hunting trips with his friends. He loved a good party and if there was music, he was dancing! Over the years, CJ and Alice spent many, many weekends camping. He was a great competitor, running in the Germanfest Fun Run, playing horseshoes, 42, washers and any game at which his kids or grandkids challenged him.  He could almost always be found in his workshop, where he enjoyed fixing things, building furniture and wooden toys, and making the best beef jerky around!

CJ loved his family deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jimmy and Teddy Hellman and two sisters, Dyann (Hellman) Hess and Mary Nell (Hellman) Newman.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Hellman; three daughters, Shawna Tankersley and husband Bill, Rhonda Dieter and husband Stan, and Christy Richbourg and husband Greg; siblings, Doris Hellman and husband Monte, Tim Hellman and wife Carol, Eddie Hellman and wife Donna, Peggy Gobble and husband Larry and sister-in-law Nancy Hellman; seven grandchildren: Keith Dieter and wife Sara, Kayla Erskine and husband Derek, Travis Tankersley, Taylor Tankersley and fiancé Megan Martinko, Tanner Tankersley, Bradley Richbourg and Ryan Richbourg; and seven great grandchildren: Ella, Audie and Theo Erskine and Layla, Sophia, Nora and Nicholas Dieter; as well as countless nieces, nephews and friends, who were very special to him.

There will be a Rosary on Sunday, August 11 at 6:30pm at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville, Texas, with visitation beginning at 5:30pm and continuing after the rosary. A Funeral Mass will be at 10:00am on Monday, August 12 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Lindsay, Texas, with the Rite of Committal immediately following at St. Peter’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Heart to Heart Hospice or The Alzheimer’s Association.
