Daniel Rector Malaise, age 70, of Lubbock, TX, passed away November 25, 2024 in Lubbock, Texas.
Born in Odessa, TX on November 28, 1953, Dan was a remarkable young man with special needs. When he was very young in the 1950’s, the doctors did not seem to have much hope that he would be able to care for himself as he became older, but they were wrong. Dan was in Special Education classes through high school and graduated from Odessa High School. He then moved to Lubbock where he went to the Lubbock State School and sheltered living where he learned how to care for himself, balance a checkbook, and cook. He moved to an apartment (spending 30 years at one apartment complex) and lived by himself. He had part-time jobs over several years as a cafeteria worker. Dan walked to the grocery store, to Furr’s cafeteria to eat, to his part time job and to all Tech sporting events in rain, sun or snow. He was a super-fan of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Dallas Cowboys, Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks and the Houston Astros. He never missed a Texas Tech football, basketball, or baseball game and had season tickets to all of them. Dan never met a stranger and his sports knowledge was unbelievable. He had a lot of people who loved to be around him and loved the dedication that he achieved over the years. Texas Tech has lost one Super Fan and his family has lost one Special young man who meant so very much to each and every one of us.
