Funeral services for Erman Jean “Okie” Downey Sr., 88, of Gainesville, are scheduled for 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Mountain View Full Gospel Church with Rev. Clyde Quick officiating. Interment will follow at Foster Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 AM prior to the funeral. Arrangements are under the care of Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.
Mr. Downey passed away February 9, 2019 in Gainesville.
Okie was born February 25, 1930 in Purnell, OK to James Audie and Betty (Williams) Downey. He was a cement truck driver by trade, having worked for Freeway, Peters & Son, and Nelson Bros. He raised and worked mules, enjoyed tinkering in his shop, and caring for his landscaping, goats, and chickens. Most of all, he treasured the time spent with family, particularly his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include: wife Tina Downey of Gainesville; daughter Betty Jackson and husband Olen of Gainesville; daughter Ruby Walker and husband Dwayne of Athens; son Billy Downey and wife Cheryl of Gainesville; son Erman Downey Jr. and wife Angie of Gainesville; daughter Darla Kearney of Valley View; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; twin brother Herman Dean Downey and wife Naomi of Ratliff City, OK; and brother Wendell Downey and wife Mary of Krum.
Mr. Downey was preceded in death by: his parents; son Billy Gene Downey; granddaughter McKenna Brooke Downey; brother Alton Downey; brother Milburn Downey; sister Neta Faye Hart; and brother Dawl Wayne Downey.
Serving as pallbearers are: Audie Downey, Cory Jackson, Zac Downey, and Graham Downey.
