A. E. "Gene" Shasteen

Visitation for Amos Eugene Shasteen will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 11, 2019. Funeral will be at 2 p.m. following the visitation. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery.


Amos Eugene Shasteen was born Dec. 29, 1931 to Alvin Hawkins Shasteen and Ina Pearl Lillard Shasteen. He passed away Jan. 7, 2019.


Eugene married his sweetheart Freddie Mae Whisenant on Oct. 4, 1951 after revival services at First Church of the Nazarene while on military leave from the U.S. Navy. He was a proud Korean War Veteran who instilled the values of patriotism and charity to his children. He graduated Officers Candidate School in 1957. After earning his B.S. and M.A. at North Texas State University, he worked as a professional educator at Gainesville State School, Roswell, New Mexico, Denton, Texas and Floydada, Texas.


In 1967 Eugene earned a Doctorate in Higher Education from the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. Upon graduation, he accepted a position as Dean of Instruction at Cooke County Jr College in Gainesville. Later he served as President of that institution. He was instrumental in beginning the Nursing, Welding and Cosmetology Programs as well as expanding the Fine Arts program. Upon retirement from education, Eugene worked in the field of residential real estate renovation and general contracting for several decades.


Eugene was true to his Christian Faith in every challenge and adventure that he ever faced. He regularly prayed with and took his family to church, also serving over a period of years on the Executive Boards for both the First United Methodist Church and the East Side Church of the Nazarene.


Survivors include wife Freddie Mae Shasteen; Daughters, Deborah Sullivant (Bill) and Marsha Shasteen (Dennis Martinez); sons David (Juanita), Art (Camilla) and Brad (Dorene). He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter Glenda Shasteen Jones. Other survivors are grandchildren: Katherine Jones, Justin Shasteen, Stephanie Sirgo, Derek Shasteen, Sam Shasteen, Brent Sullivant, Paige Sullivant Griffith, Kyle Shasteen, Freddy Shasteen, Daniel Shasteen, Emma Shasteen, Kate, Ben and Amy Sullivant; many great-grandchildren; and siblings: Martha Krebs, Jim Shasteen and John Wesley Shasteen.


Pallbearers are Thomas Cole, Mark Shasteen, Scott Davis, Kevin Shasteen, Kenny Wilson, Greg Shasteen and Jeremy Jarvis.
