George Thomason

George Gibson Thomason, 77, of Gainesville, passed away July 31, 2023 in Gainesville.

George was born August 2, 1945 in San Diego, CA.  He graduated from Ponder High School and then continued his studies at the University of North Texas.  Mr. Thomason began an impactful career as a coach and educator in 1974.  He coached basketball and track for Lindsay and Callisburg for many years.  In 2013, Mr. Thomason married Alice Burger in Sherman.  He enjoyed ranching and spending time with his family.  Mr. Thomason’s greatest joy was being a grandfather and attending their sporting events.

Mr. Thomason was predeceased by: parents Willie and Minnie Thomason; brothers Bill, John, Doc, Kenneth, and Billy Joe; and sister Ona.

Survivors include: wife Alice Thomason of Gainesville; son Will Thomason of Gainesville; son James Thomason of Portland, OR; grandson Copeland Cash Thomason; sister Mary Bradley of Arlington; step-daughter Christy Rodgers (Jimmy) of Denton and their children; step-son Jerry Burger (Kimberly) of Saint Jo and their children; and sister-in-law Carol Thomason.

A graveside service is scheduled for Friday, August 4, 2023, 10:00 a.m., Eakin Cemetery, Ponder.  The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 3, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home, Gainesville.
