Hugh Murphy Porter

Funeral services for Hugh Murphy Porter, 88, of Gainesville, are scheduled for 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, May 10, at the funeral home.  Mr. Porter passed away May 3, 2022 in Gainesville.

Hugh was born July 13, 1933 at the Gainesville Sanitarium. He was the only child of Claud Murphy (CM) Porter and Elsie Brown Porter. His grandparents were Sam Porter and Mary Fannin Porter and Calvin W. Brown and Rachel Lowery Brown.

Hugh graduated from Gainesville High School in 1952. He was very active in the Future Farmers of America and received the American Farmer Award. He attended the National FFA Convention in Kansas City with his Ag teacher, V.S. Payne, and Bill Farr, the other American Farmer recipient that year. Hugh was active in the Gainesville JayCees and served as President of the Gainesville Chapter in the early 1960s. Hugh was baptized in November 1957 at Grand Avenue Baptist Church and was an active member, serving on the House and Grounds Committee. Hugh married his high school sweetheart, Marcia Hemphill, in December 1952. They were married for almost 63 years, until her passing in 2015.  In addition to his farming and ranching activities, he was a rural mail carrier for 38 years. He carried Route 2 Gainesville for most of that time, covering Callisburg, Walnut Bend, and areas north of Lindsay. After retiring, he enjoyed operating a smaller cattle operation and working in his home woodshop.

Hugh is survived by his sons Paul Porter of Farmers Branch, David Porter and wife Kelly of Gainesville, Les Porter and wife Brenda of Denton, and adopted son Joe Hemphill of Montgomery, TX. He is also survived by granddaughters Denise Hanneschlager, Sarita Cleveland, Brittney Skelton, Ally Asaff, and Apryl Eudy, along with 10 great-grandchildren.
