During his high school years, he was dubbed “Jittery Jackie” and set many athletic records at Gainesville High School, some of which have yet to be surpassed. Jackie was highly recruited by major universities. He chose to play football under Bud Wilkerson at the University of Oklahoma when the Sooners went to the Orange Bowl for three consecutive seasons and set a record of 47 straight games without a loss. Following college, Jackie coached several high school football teams including Denton High School from 1962 to 1965. He then affiliated with Aetna Life and Casualty before returning to Gainesville to open Holt Sporting Goods and eventually become a real estate broker. Jackie was an avid outdoorsman who loved golf, fishing, hunting and camping. His greatest joy in life was spending time with family and friends.
