James Edward Cartwright

January 23, 1944 — June 30, 2018

Funeral services for James Edward Cartwright, affectionately known as “Popeye”, 74, of Thackerville, are scheduled for 10:00 AM on Thursday, July 5, 2018 at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home with Don Rogers officiating.  Interment will follow at Valley View Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Wednesday, July 4 at the funeral home.

Mr. Cartwright passed away June 30, 2018 in Thackerville.

James was born January 23, 1944 in Rubottom, OK to John Elzie and Lois Louise (Eakins) Cartwright.  The family moved to North Texas and he graduated from Valley View High School in 1962.

On December 18, 1965, James joined into marriage with Carylene Smith in Gainesville.  Together, they were members of the Moss Lake Community for 25 years.  During that time, Mr. Cartwright served as Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department.  He was able to raise the funds necessary to build current fire department facilities.

Mr. Cartwright served honorably in the U.S. Navy for four years.  He was a machinist by trade and retired from Alan Ritchey.  Mr. Cartwright enjoyed travelling, dirt track racing, bowling, fishing, and quilting with his wife.  In most recent years, he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s many activities.

Survivors include: beloved wife of 52 years, Carylene Cartwright of Thackerville; daughter Cynthia Muñoz and husband Joe of Collinsville; daughter Sarah Cuellar and husband James of Thackerville; daughter Amy Trammell and husband Barry of Woodway; son Shawn Cartwright and wife Lindsey of Austin; grandchildren: Gabriella Muñoz, Katerina Muñoz, Ezekiel Muñoz, Steven Cuellar, Cameron Trammell and his wife Stephanie, Cole Cartwright, and Weis Cartwright; great-grandson Tommy Trammell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. Cartwright was preceded in death by: parents Elzie and Lois Cartwright; sister Peggy Andrews; brother Frank Cartwright; and brother Jimmy Cartwright.

Serving as pallbearers are: Shawn Cartwright, Josh Goldsmith, Teddy Goldsmith, Jimmy Mosman, Gene Baugh, and Richard Roper.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Moss Lake Volunteer Fire Department; or American Cancer Society.
