Jan Parsons was born on the Rolling Plains of Northwest Texas in Quanah, Texas. She died on May 3, 2018 in Lake Kiowa. She was the child of L. E. Hodges and Ida Killough Hodges. She had one sister, Faye Hodges Bryant, and a sister-in-law, Ann Davis who preceded her in death.
Descended from a long line of school teachers, she knew from early childhood what her destiny would be. In elementary school she discovered music and her course was set to be a teacher of music. After graduation from Quanah High School, she attended Texas State College for Women (now Texas Women’s University) where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Arts degree. Jan taught music in the Dallas Independent School District for 32 years.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, H. J. McConnell. Several years after his death, she married Army Colonel Albro L. Parsons, Jr. Upon retirement they moved to Lake Kiowa, Texas where they became active in numerous organizations, took courses at North Central Texas College and traveled extensively about the world. Jan was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gainesville, Texas.
Survivors include: two step-sons and their wives, Tyler and Louise Parsons of Corvallis, Oregon, Scott and Susan Parsons of Alamogordo, New Mexico, and a host of nieces and nephews.
A memorial Rosary will be recited at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville. A memorial graveside service will begin at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 15 at Calvary Hill Cemetery in Dallas.
