J.D. Greene

d. May 23, 2020

J.D. Greene, 80, a longtime resident of Gainesville, passed away on Saturday, May 23rd, at his home with his wife and children by his side. Mr. Greene died from lung cancer.

Born in Wewoka, Oklahoma to Dorthy and Elbert Greene, he was the ninth of ten children. His family later moved to Wichita Falls where he attended school and met and married his sweetheart, Peachola Belknap. Their young family moved to Gainesville in the early ’60s where he worked as an independent tile contractor for over 40 years, installing ceramic tile in many homes and commercial buildings in Gainesville, and the surrounding areas.

J.D. was an avid Oklahoma University football fan who never missed watching a game and cheering for his beloved Sooners. He was a member of the Gainesville Masonic Lodge #210, and the recipient of the Golden Trowel Award in 2013, the highest award a Lodge can bestow, for his work in teaching and preparing 23 members for their Trial lectures. He enjoyed fishing and loved having fish fries for his family. His greatest joy came from spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was a long time, active member of Calvary Baptist Church.

J.D. is survived by his wife of 62 years, Peachola, his son, Dale Greene, and wife, Suzanne of Ft. Worth, daughter, Melisa O’Rear, and husband, Dan of Denton. Three grandchildren, Emily Ismert, of Euless, Chisam Hoedebeck of Gainesville, and Brady Hoedebeck, and wife, Shelbie of Alvord. Two great-grandchildren, Bridget and Jackson Gieser of Euless, one brother, Jack Greene of Gainesville, and several nieces and nephews.

J.D. was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Mabel Mask, Ruth Bullard, Lucille Neal, and Glenna Delaney, brothers Herman Greene, Joe Greene, Leroy Greene, and John Greene.

Due to the current health restrictions, a private family service will be held on Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Church, with Pastor, Jason Hobbs officiating. A public graveside service will be held on Wednesday at 2:15 p.m. at Fairview Cemetery, 710 Fair Ave., Gainesville, TX.
