Jean Haynie Peel, 92, a resident of Granbury, Texas, passed away Wednesday, August 9, 2023, in Fort Worth, Texas.
Jean was born October 15, 1930, in Hearne, Texas, to Thomas Powell Haynie Jr. and Sue Cummings Haynie. She married Hosea Bryan Peel in 1951 and they moved to Grand Prairie, Texas in 1952. They were married for 58 years until his death in 2009.
She attended schools in Bastrop, Austin and Hearne, Texas and graduated from Hearne High School in 1947. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of Texas at Austin in 1951 and was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity for Women. She received her Masters of Education in Counseling in 1978 from the University of North Texas in Denton.
Jean lived in Grand Prairie for 69 years, where she taught speech and drama as well as served as a high school counselor with the Grand Prairie ISD from 1968-1990.
She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Grand Prairie and United Methodist Women serving in leadership positions in both organizations. She taught children, youth and adults for over 50 years in her church and belonged to the New Life Sunday School class for 60 plus years. She considered herself truly blessed by the many friends she made in her church whose support and prayers helped her through many illnesses.
She was a member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association and Grand Prairie Retired School Personnel and was a Life Member of the PTA. She served as a leader in the Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts organizations and was a charter member of the Grand Prairie Women’s Club. After retirement, she volunteered for 10 years as office coordinator with the Medical Transportation Services department for the City of Grand Prairie. She also volunteered with the Grand Prairie Food and Clothing Assistance Co-op for approximately 10 years.
Jean had a love for music. She played the piano in Sunday school, sometimes sang in the church choir as well as played in the church bell choir. She enjoyed playing bridge and cherished the lifelong friendships she made with the original members of her bridge club, which was formed in 1958. She considered the ladies in her bridge group to be like sisters she never had and loved them dearly. She also liked going to the horse races and watching her favorite professional baseball team, the Texas Rangers.
