Funeral services for JJ Johnson, age 76 of Gainesville, are scheduled for Friday, February 4, 2022 at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral home with Jack Jones and Rev. Hollis Parsons officiating. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with the service beginning at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of pallbearers, the Gainesville Police Department will stand in honor for his service.
JJ went to help his fellow Marines guard the gates of Heaven after a long battle of heart disease having his first heart attack in 1993 followed by open-heart surgery in 1995 with numerous stints to follow.
JJ was born in Gainesville, on October 16, 1945. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Linda Johnson, sons Bart Johnson of Rockwall, Tommy Johnson and wife Salina of Azle, step-sons David Hensley of Thackerville and George Hensley and wife Jennifer of McAlester, Oklahoma, 11 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
JJ spent 9 years in the Marine Corps, 18 months in Vietnam and 40 years in law enforcement including Muenster PD, Cooke County Sheriff Office (May 1981-Nov 1983), Lindsay Chief of Police (Nov 1983-Sep 1984), and the last 31 years at the Gainesville Police Department (Sep 1984-May 2015). He loved his job, especially what he called “his downtown”. He never met a stranger and he enjoyed every business and their candy bowl. One of JJ’s favorite things to do was to sing in the courthouse.
JJ was preceded in death by his mother Myrtle Faye (Harlow) Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gainesville Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association (GCPAAA) on behalf of the Gainesville Police Department.
