John Dixon Truitt left Earth peacefully on Monday, February 12, 2024. He was guided on his journey to Christ by his mother, Luella McKinley Harness Truitt, his father, William Dixon Truitt, Jr., and the many family members and friends who had passed before him. John was born on January 11, 1939, and lived his whole life in Gainesville, Texas, except for his years in college.
A graduate of Oklahoma State University, John Truitt was a Cowboy through and through, obtaining two bachelor's degrees, one in Electrical Engineering and one in Economics. He never missed an opportunity to support his alma mater as an alumnus, whether watching his favorite teams compete or donating to the Alumni Foundation.
Upon graduation, John returned to Gainesville, where he worked for years alongside his father at their family business, GSI and then QMEM. He spread his entrepreneurial wings there, creating and building the machinery used to build parts and cable for the oil industry and later fiber optic cables for communications. One of John's highest honors in business was the prestigious "Vendor of the Year" award from Texas Instruments for his groundbreaking designs and high-quality products.
A devoted man of God, John was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Gainesville, where he worshipped each Sunday, attended Sunday School, and participated in Bible Studies. John enjoyed socializing with his church community, never missing an opportunity to fellowship with his brothers in Christ at the men's breakfasts or any of the many other church social activities.
John had a wry sense of humor, a quick wit, and a mischievous streak that kept you on your toes. He was a straightforward and honest man who viewed the world through a pragmatic lens, though underneath it all beat the heart of a beautifully sentimental man who loved his family and friends dearly. He will be missed by those he left behind, but we will take comfort, and even joy, in knowing he is hugging his Mama's neck, laughing with his father, and standing in the light of God's amazing grace.
John is survived by numerous Harness and Truitt cousins who are not really saying "goodbye" but "we'll see you on the other side."
Services for John Truitt will be held at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 pm – 1:50 pm, with the funeral service beginning at 2:00 pm, officiated by Rev. Mark Loewen. There will be a graveside burial service at Fairview Cemetery following the funeral service.
A donation to the Memorial Fund at First Christian Church, Gainesville (John's Church) would be appreciated in lieu of flowers. John was a proponent of this fund and a financial contributor throughout his membership at the church. You may register your condolences online at www.geojcarroll.com.
