Funeral services for Louis George Schmitt Jr., 96, of Gainesville, are set for 10:00 AM Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at the St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. John Pacheco officiating. Burial will follow at the DFW National Cemetery in Dallas under the direction of the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home at 2:00 PM Wednesday, May 22, 2019. A rosary with visitation to follow will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 6:00 PM
Louis was born on July 23, 1922 in Baltimore, Maryland to Louis George Schmitt Sr. and Eva (Bujanowski) Schmitt. He passed away on May 14, 2019 in Denison.
Louis volunteered to serve in the U.S. Navy on September 1942. He was assigned to a mine sweeping squadron of seven ships, one of which was lost by contact with an enemy mine on the day before the D-day invasion off the coast of France. The lost ship was the first of hundreds lost in the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944.
In June 1950 he graduated from the Maryland Architectural Institute in Baltimore, MD. On November 12, 1960 he married Cora Lee (Jones) Maser in Baltimore, MD. He was employed as a cabinet maker at Stewarts Department Store, and with the University of Maryland Medical College. He was also a model maker at Harry Diamond Laboratories in Washington D.C.. He retired in December of 1984 after working there for 23 years as a supervisory engineering technician.
After retiring, he worked under two Maryland Governors as a volunteer in the Foster Care Review Board. This board monitored children lacking parental supervision in Maryland. After moving to Texas in 1989, he became involved with ABBA and Home Hospice of Cooke County.
Louis is survived by his son Gary Maser and his wife Rhonda of Floral City, FL.; daughter Laurie Innis of Gainesville; granddaughter Tina Maser; 5 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Cora Lee Schmitt; brother Robert Schmitt; sister Dorothy Will; brother Leonard Schmitt; and sister Delores Campbell.
