Maggie Mae (Owens) Baker

October 6, 1923 — November 20, 2020

Our mother, known to grand-kids and great-grand kids as Granny, went to her Heavenly home on Friday, November 20, 2020, at the age of 97 while staying at Good Samaritan Lake Forrest Village in Denton, TX.

Services for immediate family will be held at a later date with Rev. Hollis Parsons Officiating. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.

Mother was born to Andy and Virgie (Baldwin) Owens on October 6, 1923 in Cooke County. Grand-daughter Valerie Harrell shared her birthday in 1979.  Mother was third of 8 children. She was a hard worker all of her life and always put her kids and family first. She did not finish the twelfth grade because she went to California to help one of her sisters with a new baby since her brother-in-law had left for the war. She married Ed Baker August 3, 1942. She helped him in his Cafés (Ed’s Café) that he had in Gainesville, Saint Jo and several other locations across Texas. After his death in 1963, she worked in the cafeteria at Gainesville Jr. High for several years. She retired from two jobs. She was a meat wrapper for Safeway for 25 years and then she went on to be a Foster Grandparent at the Denton State School for 15 years. She loved those kids and they loved her. She had to give that up at age 91 for total knee replacement and they were also phasing out that program. Mother did her own yard work until she was in her late 80’s, winning yard of the week too many times to count.

She was a member of the VFW Post 1922 Auxiliary and did a lot of volunteer work for them. Cooking for different events they held, helping with Bingo, the Dances & trips to Vegas were among her favorites.

Maggie is survived by her daughter Glenda Harrell of Gainesville, son Barry (Don) and wife Cynthia (Cooley) Baker of Little Elm, TX, daughter-in-law Debbie (Doty) Baker of Manvel, TX, step-son Eddie James and wife Betty Baker of Collinsville, TX, and step-daughter Louise (Baker, Hargesheimer) and husband James Bellows of Gainesville. 6 Grand-daughters Jackie Shortnacy, Valerie Harrell, Nicole Matarazzo, Savannah Baker, Madalynn Baker and Kathy Bauer. 2 Grand-sons Travis Baker and E.J. Baker. 12 great-grand-kids, 10 great-great-grand-kids and one sister Jean Keys of Midwest City, OK.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son - Travis Wayne, son-in-law Ronald Harrell, son James Baker - November 5, 2020, step-son-in-law J.L. Hargesheimer, grand-son Mike Hargesheimer, three sisters and three brothers.
