Marla Kay (Wilson) Woods passed away peacefully on January 1, 2024 in Gainesville.
Marla was born to Joe W. and Bobbye (Reeves) Wilson in Gainesville, TX on August 3, 1956. She graduated from Gainesville High School, and a few short weeks later, married Jerry Woods on June 21, 1974. Together they made their home on Elizabeth Street in Gainesville, where she lived until her death. Although Marla and Jerry lived in the same house for 49 years, they experienced many additions and remodels as Marla was a DIY and HGTV fanatic. Jerry happily obliged to whatever project she conjured up. She enjoyed sewing, reading and cooking. In 2011, she became Granna, a title she enjoyed most of all.
She experienced the surprise of her life in 1981 when she went to the hospital to have one baby, but had twin girls instead. When the twins started school, so did Marla. She continued her education at Cooke County Junior College and transferred to Texas Woman’s University earning a bachelor degree in elementary education in 1992 and a Master’s degree in Library Science in 1998. Marla obtained her degrees years before online classes and the internet, so she took many Saturday and night classes to achieve her goals. Marla spent many years as a librarian in Dallas and Ft. Worth ISDs. Education was always important to Marla, and she instilled that into her daughters who both became educators.
Marla is survived by her husband of 49 years, Jerry Woods of Gainesville; her twin daughters and sons-in-law, Jill and Mark Linnell of Moss Lake; Cassie and Matt Dunlap of Lake Kiowa and grandchildren: Ella, Eli, Ethan and William; brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Melissa Wilson; aunt, but more like a sister, Patsy L. Wilson.
A memorial visitation will be held at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home, 602 Lindsay St., Gainesville, TX 76240 from 5:30-7:30PM on Friday, January 5th. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the North Central Texas College Foundation to the Patty Bowden Scholarship Fund. The scholarship will be awarded to a GHS graduate who plans to pursue a career in education. You may register your condolences online at www.geojcarroll.com.
