History

Mary was born on September 12, 1930 in Denton, Texas to Pete and Mary Allene Switzer.

She was married to Calvin Dewey “CD” Fowler who passed away in 1973. She resided at Lake Kiowa since 1980 until she was moved into a nursing home in 2010.

Mary was a hoot! She could make friends at the drop of hat. Just like Will Rodgers she never met anyone she didn’t like. She was a crusty old gal that took flak off no one. She worked as a florist from 1968 until she “retired” when she moved to Lake Kiowa.  She couldn’t officially sell her arrangements at the lake so she decided to give them away to those who wanted her to prepare an arrangement.  All they needed to do was to buy the supplies she needed. Mary loved flowers and birds. She had her brother make a bird feeder that was 8’ x 12’ with a regular roof and open on all 4 sides. She dearly loved hummingbirds and usually had 12 to 24 birds at any time. She made a real “flower bed” with an old wrought iron bed frame she buried the legs in a raised bed area and planted inside and around the outside with all types of flowering plants. The ‘bed’ bloomed out nicely in the spring and several photos were submitted to a Texas magazine. They liked the concept so well they asked for permission to feature it in one of their bi-monthly publications.

Mary would dress up in a semi-clown’s costume during the Christmas season and try to bring a little joy to the young adults in the Gainesville State School. By all accounts she was a success with the kids there. She was invited back several times.

Survivors

She is survived by one son Eddie Paul Erwin and his wife Brenda Kay Erwin.

She had 5 grandchildren, Butch “JR” Elrod, Mike Erwin, Russell Elrod, Donald Elrod and Jennifer Ingham. She also had multiple great grandchildren and one great great grandchild due in November.
