Mildred Davis

Funeral services will be held at George J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home, in Gainesville, Texas on Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial to follow services at the Fairview Cemetery. Mrs. Davis passed away peacefully on September 3, 2024 in Tyler, Texas.

Mildred was born on May 7, 1926 in Montague County, Texas to George and Leatrice Russell Lumley. She graduated from Nocona High School, in Nocona, Texas. She married the love of her life, Gainesville native, Vernon Davis on October, 14, 1945. Mildred and Vernon lived in several places while Vernon worked in the oil fields. They finally settled back in Gainesville, building a house in 1953, making that their permanent residence.

In 1958, Mildred starting working at Gainesville National Bank (now Prosperity Bank), beginning in the bookkeeping department. She then worked the proofing machine, became a teller, and a receptionist. She retired in 1988 as the New Accounts Officer. Mildred was a “people person”, and loved welcoming people into the bank, and helping them open accounts, safety deposit boxes, and other business that they needed at the bank.

After retirement, Mildred volunteered for organizations that helped her community -Friends of the Library, Home Hospice, and the Cooke County Museum. Her great love was the Stanford House. She and Vernon were among the first people to attend and volunteer there. She established a gift shop that helped raise money for the operating expenses for the senior center, and Vernon did most of the maintenance on the building for many years.

Mildred loved attending activities and playing cards at the Stanford House. She also loved traveling with friends. She went to Las Vegas on holidays to see the shows with her co-workers from the bank. She was a member of First Baptist Church, serving on various committees and organizations there.

Mildred was preceded in death, by her parents, George and Leatrice (Russell) Lumley, of Nocona, her husband, Vernon Davis of Gainesville, and granddaughter Erin Greer of Killeen, Texas.

She is survived by her only child, Sandy Greer(Andy) of Killeen, Texas, twin granddaughters, Lori Redfearn (John) and Emily Greer, both of Tyler, Texas, and 3 great-grandchildren – Madison, Micah, and Cade Redfearn.

Memorial contributions in honor of Mrs. Davis may be made to Stanford House and First Baptist Church, Gainesville, Texas.
