Richard Albert Schumacher

April 25, 1925 — February 9, 2019

Funeral service and Mass of Christian Burial for Richard Albert Schumacher, 93, of Gainesville, Texas will be held at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 10:00 AM with Fr. John Pacheco officiating.  Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.  Rosary service and visitation will be held at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at 7:00 PM.

Richard was born on April 25, 1925 to Henry & Elizabeth (Schniederjan) Schumacher.  He married Florence Haverkamp of Muenster on October 6, 1948.  They celebrated their 70 th wedding anniversary this past October.  Richard passed away on February 9, 2019 at his home in Gainesville surrounded by his wife and several of his children.

Richard was born in Muenster, moving south of Gainesville in 1934.  He attended and graduated from Saint Mary’s School & High School.  The early years of his farming career were on his family farm south of Gainesville before he and Florence moved the family to the Stark Ranch 6 miles north of Gainesville in 1956 where they lived until they retired in 1989 and moved to town.  He was a farmer & rancher all of his life.  He was a life-long member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus and served as a board member for the Cooke County Farm Bureau.  His favorite pastimes included playing dominoes and taking rides in the country.

Mr. Schumacher is survived by his loving wife Florence,  14 children – Clarice (Cliff) Smouse (Lubbock), Larry (Janet) Schumacher (Muenster), Barbara (Skipper) Bezner (Lindsay), Peggy (Bill) Potts (Keller), John (Vikki) Schumacher (Boise City, OK), Rudy (Joann) Schumacher (Era), Tim (Linda) Schumacher (Lindsay), Gene (Susan) Schumacher (Era), Donna (Joel) Harlow (Canton), Chuck (Alice) Schumacher (Gainesville), Hank (Tracy) Schumacher (Lindsay), Kevin Schumacher (Callisburg), Mark (Paula) Schumacher (Dalhart), Janie (Mike) Cartmell (Frisco); 31 grandchildren: Elizabeth Tew, Rick, Wayne & JD Holder, Zack Schumacher, Leslie Crutsinger, Sister Mary Clare Bezner, Jennifer Dougherty, Jeff Bezner, Jacque Schilling, Stormie Mosimann, Kylee Chester, Scott Schumacher, Kelly Dunn, Dana Henderson, Adam Schumacher, Megan Burks, Stephanie Schumacher, Stacie Eggleston, BJ Harlow, Katy Montoya, Ryan Harlow, Kimberly Reiter, Jason Schumacher, Cory Boyd, Catlynn & Casey Schumacher, Clayton, Travis, Justin & Audri Schumacher; and 42 great-grandchildren with 5 more on the way.  Richard is also survived by his sisters: Leona (Ben) Miller and Mary Lou Schroeder, brother Melvin (Patsy) Schumacher, and numerous nieces & nephews.

Mr. Schumacher was preceded in death by his parents and brother Henry Schumacher, Jr.

Mr. Schumacher’s sons are serving as pallbearers.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Richard’s caregivers during the last year – Peggy Crombie and Dora Colunga.

In lieu of flowers, the family would ask that any memorial contributions be made to Saint Mary’s School.
