Robert Bauer, longtime resident of Gainesville, Texas passed away November 7, 2023 at the age of 99. In the weeks preceding his death, he enjoyed dozens of visits from family and friends. He remained clear and interested in his family, his friends, current events and new ideas until the very last.
Robert was born December 27, 1923 in Pilot Point, Texas. He was the second of five children born to Joe and Emma (Henzler) Bauer. The family moved to a farm in Gainesville in 1934 and Robert attended St. Mary's School, but only after all the cotton was picked! Even so, he graduated as valedictorian in 1941 just six months before the attack on Pearl Harbor.
As a young man, Robert was fascinated with airplanes. After the United States entered World War II, Robert, underage at 17, convinced his parents to sign permission papers so he could enlist in the Army Air Corp. He was trained to be an airplane mechanic and spent much of the war in West Africa repairing shot up and damaged planes. After the war ended, he returned home and worked as a mechanic for R. D. Clack Chevrolet for many years before moving to National Supply where he spent his remaining work years.
On July 21, 1948, Robert married Ann Geray (d. 10/7/17), also of Gainesville. They are survived by three children: Sharon Krebs Amaral (Ronnie) of Rhode Island and Lindsay, Texas; Robert “Bob” Bauer (Becky) of Sherman and Dale Bauer (Kathy) of Gainesville. We all remember summer Sundays spent at Lake Texoma where we all learned to water ski and swim while Mom grilled burgers and Dad drove the boat for skiing. Dad and Mom loved to travel and enjoyed many trips all over the world during their retirement years.
Mr. Bauer is also survived by six grandchildren: Bethany Krebs Schully (Patrick), Sondra Bauer Taylor (Michael), Courtney Krebs Hughes (Fred), Nicole Bauer Moseley (Jason), Marci Bauer Johnson (Josh), and Brandon Bauer (Lauren); eleven great-grandchildren: Austin Schully (Campbell), Avery Hughes, Kyla Moseley, Andrew Schully, Corinn Schully, Zachary Taylor, Addison Johnson, Tess Hughes, Abigail Taylor, Emerson Johnson and Evie Ann Louise Bauer; sister, Mary Ann Fleitman; and brother, Cletus Bauer.
Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Geray Bauer; parents, Joe and Emma Bauer; brother, Joe Bauer, Jr.; sister, Virginia Bauer; son-in-law, Ronald Krebs; nephew, Brian Bauer and niece, Mary Lou Fleitman.
