Funeral services for Robert Paul Walterscheid are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Father Matthew Tatyrek officiating. Rosary will be held on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
Robert Walterscheid died on January 10, 2021, peacefully at home.
He was born on March 26, 1946, to Ann Huchton and lovingly adopted by Otto Walterscheid. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Muenster, Texas, and transferred to Subiaco Academy in Arkansas for his high school years. Under the direction of Father Nicholas Fuhrmann, Robert participated in boxing. He also competed in football and developed a love for diving.
He was drafted to the US Army in 1966 and served in active duty until 1968. He was honorably discharged from the reserves in 1972. While stationed at the DMZ in Korea, Robert earned the National Defense Service Medal, Expert Badge and Rifle Bar, Sharpshooter Badge and Machine Gun Bar, Marksman Badge and Pistol Bar, Korea Defense Service Medal and the distinguished Medal of Merit.
Robert started dating Deborah Schilling in 1968 and they married two years later at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They moved to Wichita Falls, Texas, so Robert could attend college at Midwestern State University where he majored in biology and chemistry. While in Wichita, he and Deborah formed many friendships which continue to this day. After retiring from the City of Gainesville health department, he returned to college to become a registered nurse. He completed his career at Denton Presbyterian Hospital.
Robert and Deborah have two daughters, Leah and Allison, born in 1973 and 1976 respectively. He was a loving father and devoted husband of 50 years. Robert’s children characterize him as “undeniably the best dad EVER.” He was compassionate, supportive, motivational and inspirational. He was extremely involved in his daughters’ lives filling them with love and laughter. He will always be in our hearts.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ann and Otto Walterscheid. He is survived by his wife, Debbie Walterscheid, his daughters and sons-in-law, Leah and Jared Bayer, and Allison and Erich Slocum. He is also survived by his six grandchildren: Katie Bayer, Pearce Slocum, Clayton Bayer, Presley Slocum, Hunter Bayer and Shelby Bayer.
Pallbearers are Wayne Trachta, Joel Schilling, Lynn Huchton, Roger Huchton, Chad Sandmann, and Pat Bowman.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Subiaco Endowment Fund, or Home Hospice of Grayson County.
