Rudolph William Dieter was born on April 28, 1934, and passed away peacefully on April 25, 2024; just 3 days’ shy of his 90th birthday.
Rudy was the youngest of six children born to Val J. and Clara Wiese Dieter. He was born on the family farm where he spent his childhood and attended school in Lindsay until his graduation in 1952. After graduation he went to work for the Shell Oil Company seismograph crew. He was drafted into the United States Army in July of 1956 and was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio. While in the service, Rudy returned home 3 months later to marry Anna Belle Metzler on October 17. Rudy and Anna Belle made their first home in San Antonio until 1958. After returning to the Gainesville area, Rudy operated a small food and beverage drive-in until the property was claimed by the rerouting of I-35 in 1959. In December of that year, Rudy joined the team at Southland Paint Company. He worked in various areas of Southland Paint and made his way through the ranks to become Plant Manager. He remained at Southland Paint until the company was sold and closed in August of 1989. After a brief employment at Weber Aircraft, Rudy went to work for Spraylat Corporation until his retirement in 2010.
Rudy had a servant’s heart. Beginning as an altar server at St. Peter’s Church in his youth he would become one of the first to be a Lector and Eucharistic Minister when those ministries were opened to the laity. He was a member of St. Cecilia’s Choir, St. Peter’s Society, and served numerous terms as a Parish Council member. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus Council #11905.
Rudy also served on the committee to plan and construct Centennial Hall, was a member of the Lindsay school board, a city council alderman, PTC officer, and a booster club member. Rudy spent time gathering stones from the farm of his lifelong friend, Frank Haverkamp, and together the two of them worked tirelessly to restore and preserve the grotto standing behind St. Peter’s Church. Rudy and Anna Belle created a firm foundation to raise their 6 children. He was most proud of his faith, followed by an endearing love for his wife of 67 years, and strong supporter of his children and grandchildren. When asked about their dad, their reply is simple, “He was a good man.” Rudy and Anna Belle were very clear that their 5 daughters-in-law and 1 son-in-law were welcomed into the family and treated as one of their own children.
Rudy was a talented gardener and took pride in maintaining his yard and landscape to near perfection. His large garden produced vegetables that he, Anna Belle, and family would work to store and can for the year. You could find him and many family members on the back porch brushing pickles, shelling peas, snapping green beans or shucking corn. Anna Belle would can pickles, salsa, and kraut, and put away enough vegetables so that she and Rudy would cook and host their family every week for Sunday lunch.
Rudy lived a life of faith, goodness, and love and will be deeply missed by those close to him.
