A Celebration of Life for Suzanne Cain will be held the following week on Friday, June 9, 2023 from 6-8 pm in Binkley Hall at First United Methodist Church, Sherman, Texas.
Suzanne was born November 29, 1935 to Dorothy and Frank Johnson of Houston, Texas. Some of her fondest memories of her early years growing up in Houston include playing outside on the shell streets in her Bellaire neighborhood, catching crawdads along the canals and studying ballet from a world-renowned instructor.
The family moved to Gainesville, Texas in the 40’s where she enjoyed riding her horse, became the first female lifeguard for the Gainesville Swimming Pool and graduated from Gainesville High School in 1954. She pursued a degree from North Texas State College where she had her first date with Billy Cain at a school dance. Suzanne graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and began her teaching career in West Texas. Soon after, Suzanne and Bill were engaged and married on June 29, 1957. They began raising their family and establishing valued friendships across Texas, first in Gainesville and seven other towns throughout Bill’s 41-year professional journey with Texas Power & Light Company. During that time, she earned a Master’s in Education from NTSU, and was a substitute teacher in local schools as well as a certified Red Cross swimming instructor. Sue had many gifts and a wide-range of interests: avid genealogist, artist, and earned a triple brown belt in Tae Kwon Do. Her greatest joy was helping others in countless ways and true to her wishes, those kindnesses were unknown to most. Until recently, she was active in her community by serving on the board of Sherman Public Library, The Sherman Museum, and was a past president of United Methodist Women’s Group, Sherman, Texas, where she was an active member of the church since 1986.
Suzanne and Bill had three sons, Mike, Brian and Shannon Cain. She was a tremendous advocate and fierce protector of her family and friends. She was an avid reader and enjoyed Texas History and Natural Science. Suzanne was blessed with quick wit, grit and grace, was a true Texan and a devoted Daughter of the Republic. She carried on her family’s legacy of ranch ownership near Muenster, Texas.
She is survived by her three sons and their wives, Michael and Tina Cain of Waxahachie, Texas, Brian and Candace Cain of Waxahachie, Texas, and Shannon and Shannon Cain of Sherman, Texas. Surviving grandchildren are Caitlin Cain Smith and husband Brian of Kaufman, Texas, Blake Cain and wife Ashley of Gunter, Texas, Chase Cain and wife Dana of Round Rock, Texas, Charles Cain and wife Megan of Hutto, Texas, Lukas Cain of Tyler, Texas, and Landon, Weston and Hudson Cain of Sherman, Texas. Great-grandchildren are Rylen and Gage Smith, Graham and Sloan Cain, and Palmer Cain. She will be greatly missed by her entire family, as well as her extended family and lifelong friends.
Suzanne was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 53 years, Bill Cain, by her parents, Frank and Dorothy Johnson, and by her aunt, Wilkie Manning.
