A graveside service for Vernon Leroy Davis, 96, of Gainesville, is set for 2:00 PM Wednesday, April 29, 2019 at the Fairview Cemetery with Dr. Jeff Langley officiating. No visitation is planned.
Vernon was born on October 29, 1923 in Gainesville to John W. Davis and Lydia Carrie (Robert) Davis. He passed away on April 25, 2020 in Gainesville.
During WWII he served in the U.S. Army as a technical sergeant with the 740th Tank Battalion in 1943. After the war, he married Patsy Mildred "Boots" Lumley in Henrietta on October 14, 1945. He worked for National Supply Company - a division of Armco Steel, retiring in 1986. Vernon was a Master Mason in Gainesville Lodge No. 210. He was also a member of Belle Moon, Chapter 90, Order of the Eastern Star, and an endowed member of the Fort Worth Scottish Rite 320.
After retirement, he and Mildred enjoyed traveling with friends. They were among the first group of senior adults to enjoy Stanford House activities. Vernon loved woodworking, spending hours in his shop.
Both Mildred and Vernon have been members of First Baptist Church of Gainesville for more than 50 years.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 73 years, Mildred Davis of Gainesville; daughter Sandy Greer and her husband Andy of Killeen; twin granddaughters Lori Greer Redfearn and her husband John, and Emily Greer. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Corrine Davis Pope; and granddaughter Erin Greer.
