Walter David Vickers

Walter David Vickers, 78, of Gainesville, TX, passed away February 24, 2022 in Gainesville.

Walter was born December 13, 1943 in Bogalusa, LA to Hugh David and Olga Florence (Brand) Vickers.  He was raised in Jourdanton, TX by her grandparents, Daddy Al and Momma Cain.  Mr. Vickers received his Bachelor’s Degree from Texas A&I - Kingsville.  While at college, he met Linda Sue Douglas and the couple was married on May 31, 1969 in Calallen, TX.  Mr. Vickers served honorably in the U.S. Air Force for four years, stationed in Rapid City, SD.  He began working for the Sante Fe Railroad and was transferred from Amarillo to Gainesville in 1979.  Mr. Vickers retired from BNSF as a Claim Agent after 30 years of employment.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus #1167.  Mr. Vickers enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and most of all, spending time with his grandkids.

Survivors include: daughter, Katherine Putnam and husband, James of Gainesville; daughter, Melinda Carroll and husband, Jeremy of Gainesville; grandchildren: Andrew, Natalie, Jonathan, and Addisyn; brother, Tommy Vickers and wife, Linda of Jourdanton; sister-in-law, Margaret Ann Feldhusen of Cypress; brother-in-law, Jack Douglas and wife, Roberta of Richmond; and sister-in-law, Yvonne Douglas of Cleveland.

Mr. Vickers was preceded in death by: wife, Linda Sue Vickers; and parents, Hugh and Olga Vickers.

A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:00 A.M. on Monday, February 28, 2022, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Fr . John Pacheco officiating.  Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery.  A Rosary Prayer Service will begin at 6:00 P.M. on Sunday, February 27 at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.  The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. following the Rosary.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to all those that helped take care of Walter over the last several years.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Catholic School and Church.
