Walter Bernard Wolf, 89, of Gainesville passed away peacefully at his home on October 21, 2023.
A memorial mass will be held Saturday, October 28, 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church with a private burial to follow at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Rosary and visitation will be held on Friday, October 27, 5:30 p.m. at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home Chapel.
Walter was born on August 24, 1934 in Windthorst, Texas to Adam and Mary (Schroeder) Wolf. He was a member of the last graduating class from St. Mary High School, the Class of 1952. Walter then joined the United States Army, serving proudly from 1954 through 1956. After serving his country, he attended college at Cooke County Junior College and received his Bachelor’s Degree from North Texas State University in 1960. Walter worked as a teacher, coach and laborer, retiring from Valenite in 1991 as a plant manager. Having a strong work ethic, Walter was not retired long before he began a part-time job at Lakeway; he continued to work there for several years.
Walter married Georgia Hartman on October 2, 1956 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Muenster, Texas. They made their home in Gainesville and had six children. Walter worked a second job at Metzler Brothers for many years to provide his children a Catholic education at St. Mary Catholic School. He held offices on various committees for the school and St. Mary Catholic Church throughout the years. Walter was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Council # 1167 and the Veteran of Foreign Wars.
Walter is survived by his wife of 67 years, Georgia; daughters: Deana Halbert and Carla Wolf; sons: Chris Wolf and wife Marla; Scott Wolf and wife Sherry; Craig Wolf and wife Angie; and Kevin Wolf; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. Survivors also include brother Johnny Wolf and wife Fran; sisters-in-law Carol Hartman, Edna Tompkins, Alma Wolf, and Pat Yosten and husband John; brothers-in-law Alvin Hartman, Gene Hartman, Walter Hermes and Harvey Schmitt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, Adam and Mary; father and mother-in-law, Victor and Margaret Hartman; son-in-law Terry Halbert; brothers and wives Ed and Eunice Wolf; Lee and Betty Wolf; brother Adam Wolf; and sisters JoAnn Hermes and Mary Arendt and husband, Paul; sisters-in-law Joan Hartman, Judy Hartman, Katherine Gremminger, and Della Schmitt; brothers-in-law Willard Hartman, Ted Gremminger, Tommy Gremminger and Keith Tompkins; and great-granddaughter Gracie Wolf.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Walter’s memory to St. Mary Catholic School, Gainesville or Knights of Columbus, Council # 1167.
