Wanda Eudene Green Henry went to be with her Lord and Savior on Wednesday, November 3, 2021.
Wanda was born June 28, 1931 in Dorchester, Texas to Ben Fredrick and Lillie O’Dell Peters Green. She attended school in Southmayd, Texas where she was a member of the girl’s High School basketball team.
Wanda met Lawrence Henry while working as a waitress in Sherman, Texas. They were married on October 19, 1949. Lawrence was an oil field supervisor and they traveled all over Texas following the oil boom. They became parents of two boys: Eddy born in 1950 and Mike born in 1955.
In 1955 they decided to make their home in Gainesville, Texas so the boys would have a permanent home and continuous education.
Wanda worked for over 20 years as a cook for North Central Texas College, then known as Cooke County College. She was well respected and the students often came to her not only when they were hungry, but also for counseling and her wisdom. It was not unusual for students to come to her home when they had a problem or just needed someone to talk to.
Wanda was an avid bowler and enjoyed the leagues she was a member of. At one point in time, she had the highest score of any women at the 77 Bowl in Gainesville. Her championship team was sponsored by her brother, JD Green, the longtime mayor of Whitesboro, Texas. She was always proud of her other brothers: Wayne, a retired preeminent law enforcement instructor of Rockport and Les, an award-winning Educator and Mathematician.
In later years, Wanda would go on over-night trips with her sister, Lela Hively. They would never tell us where they were going, but when they got back and told us of their adventures, we were all glad they took Lela’s daughter, Karen Edgett, as a chaperone.
Her biggest joy in life was her family. She was a big supporter of her boys in all their activities. She was a Room Mother and member of the Parent-Teacher Organization while serving several years as president.
Wanda always welcomed everyone into her home. You would never leave her home hungry. More than not, there were friends of Eddy & Mike’s enjoying her wonderful cooking. She was known to feed whoever came, including the North Texas Mean Green Football team.
When she was not feeding her family or playing with her grandchildren, she loved watching all professional sports, especially the Texas Rangers, Dallas Mavericks, and Dallas Cowboys. She would always discuss the games with her grandchildren.
Wanda is survived by her two sons and their spouses: Eddy (Patsy) and Mike (Marcy) Henry. Grandchildren: Michael (Lesley) Henry, Kimberly Henry, Brian (Sarah) Henry, Rob Henry, Jason (Jamie) Henry, and Jay Henry. Great-Grandchildren: Weston, Hailey, Jessie, and Jenny Henry. She is also survived by brothers: Wayne (Sue) Green and Lavoy Green.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, sisters Lela Hively and Grace Gregg, brothers Billie Dean and Joe Green.
A memorial service will be held at 6:00 PM Wednesday, November 10, 2021 at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home.
