Belvin “Bill” Harris, of Gainesville was born January 18th, 1938 in Midland, TX. He passed from this life on December 23, 2022 in Sherman, TX at the age of 84. Bill was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie (Vest) Harris, his father, Victor Harris, his brother, Temple, and his sisters Charlene and Donna. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Rosie, his brother John Harris and wife Nancy, his sister Pinkie Lowrance and husband Parker, his brother Tommy Harris and wife Angie, his brother Danny Harris and wife Ann, his daughter Carolyn Elizabeth “Libbie” Zwinggi, his son Linc Harris and wife Vanessa, his step-daughter Debbie McDaniel and Husband Dale, his step-daughter Rhonda Cummins and husband Bob, his best friend of 50 years, Don Hobbs, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, family, and friends.
Bill graduated high school in Midland and went on to study law at the University of Texas, earning his law degree in 1962. Bill began his career working for Mr. Sullivant in Gainesville, and continued to practice general law his entire life, holding various positions such as Cooke County Judge (during which time he established the Cooke County Court at Law), a criminal defense attorney, the city attorney of the city of Lindsay and the city of Gainesville, and a family lawyer.
When Bill was in his 50’s, he became a Christian, obeying the Lord in baptism. He was a member of the Concord Church of Christ in Gainesville, TX where he preached several sermons. Bill was skilled in and loved to research law, and other lawyers would come to him for help with research. He also loved to read and loved to tell stories, including in his sermons. Bill was an avid golfer as well as a Dallas Cowboys and Texas Longhorns football fan. Bill had a friendly demeanor and was well-known and liked by many in the Gainesville community.
Family visitation will be on Wednesday, December 28th at 1 P.M. followed by a funeral service at 2 P.M. with an interment service following at Fairview Cemetery. Services will be held at the Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home in Gainesville, 602 S Lindsay St, Gainesville, TX 76240. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Concord Church of Christ in Gainesville or Meals on Wheels.
